Here we are - here is what is known today (history, services, context) about the Monopoli-Fasano hospital (formerly the Monopoli/area reference hospital), and some considerations regarding public order, accessibility and services.
🏥 What is the Monopoli-Fasano Hospital: history and structure
The Monopoli-Fasano Hospital is the new large public hospital that was inaugurated on 26 July 2025 as the reference facility for the south-eastern Bari area (but not yet officially operational)
It was built to replace the former garrison (the “San Giacomo” hospital in Monopoli, among others), with activities scheduled to be transferred from that date.
The facility is located in contrada Sant'Antonio d'Ascula, on a total area of approximately 178,000 m².
The building is on several levels (three main floors plus a basement level) and is designed according to modern criteria of efficiency and sustainability, with local materials, spacious and environmentally friendly spaces.
✅ Services, departments and technologies - what it offers today
The hospital is designed as a centre of excellence for a vast catchment area (more than 260,000 - 264,000 inhabitants in the provinces involved) - it serves Monopoli, Fasano and neighbouring municipalities.
Key features include:
299 beds and about 150 in-patient rooms.
9 operating theatres for surgical operations - among them also emergency-urgency and orthopaedic rooms.
Comprehensive departments and services: general medicine and surgery, advanced diagnostics, intensive care, psychiatric and nursing services, maternity and child department, dialysis, medical and oncology day services, outpatient services.
Imaging diagnostics and advanced technology: about 10 dedicated rooms with modern equipment (CT, MRI, X-ray, mammography, ultrasound, etc.).
Emergency and urgent services, with emergency rooms, dedicated rooms, and even helicopter rescue - to ensure rapid intervention for critical cases.
Ancillary services: ample parking (over 740 spaces), structural appearance designed for comfort and privacy, common areas, and integrated “hospital-park” environments with attention to integration into the local landscape.
In summary, the hospital aims to ensure a modern and comprehensive health care offer - both for routine and emergency care - covering a wide range of needs for the population of the entire area.
🌿 Conception, sustainability and integration with the territory
A distinctive feature of Monopoli-Fasano is the focus on sustainable architecture and environmental integration:
The project was developed to minimise environmental impact, with the use of local materials, energy-efficient systems and bioclimatic design.
The complex fits harmoniously into its Apulian surroundings, amidst hills, olive groves and typical landscape, maintaining the character of the area.
The stated aim: to offer a modern healthcare facility that is also “people-friendly”, with well-kept environments and an approach that combines clinical efficiency with the well-being of its users.
🔎 Public and private services in the area / private healthcare situation
The Monopoli-Fasano hospital is the public reference facility for the area, managed by ASL Bari, and will replace - to a large extent - the previous “San Giacomo” hospital.
As far as private healthcare or private hospitals/clinics are concerned, the Apulia region is also served by private networks, such as the GVM Hospitals chain, which operates in some locations (including the Bari-Lecce area), offering a range of specialised, surgical, diagnostic, rehabilitation, oncological, and highly specialised services.
In practice: local public healthcare with Monopoli-Fasano is strengthened by an up-to-date and modern pole; private healthcare, although present in Apulia, does not - to the best of our knowledge - have a major facility in Monopoli with recent published data.
📌 What does it mean for you / for those living in or visiting Monopoli
If you live in Monopoli or are thinking of staying there, these considerations may come in handy:
With Monopoli-Fasano you have a modern, comprehensive hospital for routine care, emergencies, diagnostics and operations - a reassuring element in terms of health.
The presence of a first-class health service also strengthens the attractiveness of the area for those seeking temporary/residential accommodation: health, comfort and quality of life become concrete factors.
Although there are no (at least publicly) large private clinics in Monopoli, the regional private healthcare network remains within reach - useful in the case of more specialised needs.
At the moment, there are no known public criticalities related to the safety or functioning of the hospital, which contributes to an image of reliability for residents and tourists.
